San Felipe 1957 Mustang Golf State Champ, Joe Trevino, passed away Wednesday, August 6, 2014

posted Aug 9, 2014, 4:24 PM by raul bermudez

San Felipe 1957 Mustang Golf State Champ, Joe Trevino, passed away Wednesday, August 6, 2014, in San Antonio, Texas, after a two-month battle with congestive heart failure at the age of 75. He was born may 24, 1939, in San Angelo, Texas, to Jose Donaciano (Chano) Trevino and Maria Luisa Jimenez. He is preceded in death by his brother, Ruben Trevino.

He is survived by his sons, Joe Trevino, Jr., and Daniel Trevino; daughters, Mary Jane Fernandez and Lisa Trevino; brother, Richard Trevino; sisters, Rosie Ybarra and Rita T. Zuniga.

Joe began his love for golf at the tender age of 10 doing caddying in his native San Angelo. At the age of 12, his family moved to Del Rio when his father passed away. He graduated from San Felipe High School in 1958 and soon after married Elvia Espinoza, the mother of his children.

He attended Sul Ross State University for a year but did not continue due to already having several children and financial encounters. Soon after, Joe began working at Laughlin Air Force Base civil service and later transferred to Travis Air Force Base in California in 1971 where he retired in 1995 after 35 years of service.

His love for Del Rio brought him back and had resided here ever since. He continued playing golf when he had the chance and also had a passion to work and refurbish golf clubs and also gave golf lessons.

Joe is a 2012 inductee into the Latin American International Sports Hall of Fame. The miracle story of the San Felipe High School Mustang Golf team who won the Texas State High School Golf Championship in 1957 was written by Attorney Humberto G. Garcia. This miracle story has been turned into a book (Mustang Miracle) and comedian George Lopez’s Traviezo Productions owns the film rights to turn it into a major motion picture.

Joe’s favorite pastime was going to Kickapoo eagle Casino. Joe will be greatly missed by his golf buddies.
